Hello all. With my past 2 cars (2004 RX8 currently), I have been very active in the online forum community, and know this is a good way to find out information on the car even before buying. So I thought I would post some info about my car-hunt and get some input from those in the know, even if they will be a little biased.
I've been car shopping for a couple weeks now and think I have narrowed my search to a couple or three cars. 3.8 Track is by far the front-runner for overall style and performance, but is the most $$ (only reason there are 2 other contenders). I have driven this car (along with the 2.0T..no comparison), and love it! I only drove the automatics as I have been driving a stick for the last 7.5 years (and a total of 13 of my 20 years owning cars) and would like a break.
I also drove the Mazdaspeed 3, and it has great performance, is cheaper and has room for mountain bike, etc inside. It's just nowhere near as sexy and doesn't "feel right" when sitting in the driver seat (boring dashboard).
One I want to check out soon is the Volvo C30. Price is cheaper, and has some space in back also. No clue what it really looks like in person.
Please help talk me into this car....I mean, give me some honest insight ;-)
As for the best of the Genesis Coupe bunch I completely agree on the 3.8 Track model for someone who plans to do light modding. If you have the time, desire and budget the 2.0 model can become quite a powerful car after some serious modification including new turbo, exhaust and tune. I am not a fan of Mazda's at all including the RX8 and Mazda3. As for the Volvo I just don't see them as a tuner car or anywhere related to the scene the Genesis falls in. It is a nice car however.
If I were you and shopping around, wait until Spring 2012 when the new refreshed Genesis models come out and test drive them again. The new 3.8GDi is getting a bump to around 350hp and the all new twin scroll 2.0T will be at about 275hp. Both include a huge list of newly upgraded features as well. See more in my video below.

I "appreciate" the info. I put that in quotes because I now have one more thing to think about! That 2013 looks a bit more edgy, very nice. I'm sure the GDi is going to be more $$ than the Track, and this is already at the top of my price range. (EDIT: After looking around a bit, I see that 2013 is going to be REALLY nice! Any word on if it will still be in the $31k range?)
You are correct that I have gotten past my need to tinker with my car. At 39 years old, I've even gotten lazy enough to say I want an automatic. I was never a "tuner" by any means. I've mostly been into some minor cosmetic and bolt-on performance mods (intake/Ram air, exhaust, lowering springs, rims) and that's about it. I did speak to the dealer about the ability to tune the 2.0T. He mentioned it could get up to the same power as the 3.8 with some pretty simple programming/chip work. You mention quite a bit more than that, but that is probably to get more than 300 HP?
One thing that has me concerned is the Consumer Reports ranking. They rank this car a little on the low side, and it seems to be due to elecrical problems? Any thoughts on this?
As for the RX-8, though I have had a couple issues with mine, I really love the car. I should have known better than to buy a first year model. Mazda created a new look back in 02 or 03 that has really sold well. I was out wanting a 350Z or STi back then, but fell in love with the RX8 the minute I sat in it. One test drive and didnt care it had a little less power than the Z.
I'm sure the new 2013 3.8's will be available for less than $30k. I can't really see Hyundai increasing their prices all that much on the Coupes. I can understand the feeling of not wanting to tinker too much with your vehicle so buying one that has all of the features you would want up front is not a bad decision. The 3.8 is available today as a base, GT, Track and R-Spec version but for 2013 I'm not sure which packages will be available. If you are a performance junkie and want to save some cash I would recommend the R-Spec. If you prefer to ride with a few extra luxuries such as premium leather and upgraded sound system then a Grand Touring would suite you well.
I have not heard of any electrical problems reported on the Genesis Coupes. The most common issues I have seen are relative to transmissions on the manual cars. So go automatic if that suits your driving style

Thanks again CMcCane. I must say I'm a little disappointed in a lack of input from others. I posted on the C30 forums, after driving one this weekend, and got about 10 replies in half a day with lots of good input. (Maybe the New Members thread isnt a popular place? Feel free to move this to General Discussion to get a little more visability).
Though I'm sure you know more about the future cars than I, it wouldnt be a big surprise to see the new packages be priced a little higher. When Nissan went from the 350 to 370, they increased pricing a few $K across all models, IIRC. The GDi will be a direct competitor of the higher models there and even the Infiniti version G series.
Sorry for the slow responses. Our site is deffinately much of a smaller community but full of great people.
As for the prices on the Coupes I would say that if they were to go up even $3000 on each model that would put them so close to the 370z territory that it would be hard for someone to justify the purchase of a Hyundai over the Nissan competitor. I wish you luck on your search and once again wait for the 2013's to hit and give them a shot! I'll be considering a 2013 when I'm ready to trade in my 2010 Coupe in March.

I notice a lot of people have GT's. I can see the 6 or 8 differences between the Track and GT, and it seems like for the $1000, the Track offers a lot more. Are there some intangibles that make the GT more appealing? Maybe the suspension is too tight on the Track?
