Pit bulls got a bad rap. My sweet Golden Retriever is #1 on the bite list. Pit Bulls are down the list.

The 'bad rap' is well earned. Nearly half of all fatalities in the past 27 years are from pit bulls. Maybe they don't bite the most often but they are more likely to kill when they do bite. I actually find it hard to believe that golden retrievers are the most common dog to bite considering they're on no lists I've found listing them as a common biter...but they are listed several times as least common. The CDC did a study of nearly 300 dog bites. 2 were Golden Retrievers which is amazing because they're the 2nd most popular dog! The labrador retriever was #1 on the list but its also the most popular dog. THat doesn't mean its more likely to bite than a pit bull...there's so many more of them out there that. You have to look at the ratio of bites to dogs. 20 bites from 2,000 dogs isn't as bad as 10 bites from 200 ;)

Pit bulls were bred to fight and kill...and they do.

1st watch Animal Planets "Breed all about it" on Golden Retrievers. Because they are mouthy dogs by design they are #1 on the list. #2 is the German Shepard. The bad rap that Pitt Bulls have is from Irresponsible people like Michael Vick who breed them to fight. These dogs are bred, and treated poorly. Some have even been fed gun powder which is know to make dogs aggressive, and dangerous.
If A Pitt Bull bites you, he will inflict serious damage to you.

Now come on over and I'll show you 3 Pitt Bulls raised by responsible owners. I would trust these dogs with an infant. Actually my sister does. They are great dogs always willing to please.

Any dog treated poorly like a Pitt Bull will act the way some do

The problem with animal lovers, I've noticed, is that they are more than willing to overlook an animal's natural tendencies. I just went and watched Animal Planet's "Breed All About It" and "Dogs 101" clips on the Golden Retriever...which only say that they're #3 on the bite list. As the most common dog out there...that doesn't mean much to me unless that's number #3 in change that the dog will bite, which is incredibly unlikely. That said...if its turning into a biter (which from the sparse information out there this seems to be a very recent development in the breed) I wouldn't want one around me either. The fact that over the past 5 years, Pit Bulls account for 58% of all dog bite fatalities also contradicts everything you want to believe. Just like a properly trained tiger can be handled by its trainer doesn't mean its a safe animal. Its always on the edge.

Personally I think anyone willing to leave an infant alone with any animal...dog or cat...has a very mixed up set of priorities.

Of that 58% how many were from dogs that were well trained and cared for? They were most likely inner city dogs who were raised aggressively. Did that sound Politically correct?

As far as tigers, no comparison. They are not domesticated like dogs.

And for the baby line. I've grown up around dogs, my son has grown up around dogs. Before questioning priorities a little investigation is in order don't you think? When my son was an infant, his best protector was his dog.

I guess we won't agree, so stick with your fish
