Default 101 Ways to Lose Your Gut

    Hey All,

I have always been a bit of a body concious person and found a pretty good article from Mens Health Magazine explaining 101 Ways to Lose Your Gut. All in all they make some pretty good sense and a few are really simple adjustments to your daily routine you can do to see results.

What are some good tips you guys have on how to lose some fat and stay in shape?

    Eat more protein.
About 25%-30% of the calories in each gram of protein are burned in digestion, compared to only 6%-8% of the calories in carbs. Do the math: You save 41 calories every time you substitute 50 grams of protein for an equal amount of carbs.

    Read labels.
Avoid foods with "high-fructose corn syrup" in the ingredients list. Since 1971, consumption of this sugar substitute—which is used to sweeten soda, commercial baked goods, and even condiments—has increased more than 350% in the U.S., paralleling the rise in obesity.

    Get off your ass.
Do every exercise standing instead of sitting. "You'll expend up to 30% more calories," says Joe Stankowski, C.P.T. The solution for the bench press? Dips.

    Mix up your movements.
When you lift, perform supersets in which you alternate between sets of lower-body and upper-body exercises. That way, your lower body rests while your upper body is working. "This allows you to work your muscles maximally with very little downtime between sets for a faster, more effective workout" says Craig Ballantyne, C.S.C.S.

    Exercise blind.
When you're using the elliptical trainer, try letting go of the handles and closing your eyes. (Be careful!) Without the visual feedback, your core muscles will have to work harder to keep you balanced, burning more calories.

    Embrace yardwork.
View any type of physical activity—even those you try to avoid, such as mowing the lawn—as a chance to burn fat and condition your body. (Just make sure you use a push mower.)

    Snack on dill pickles.
They have one calorie per slice.

    Take larger steps.
When using the stair climber, skip one out of every five steps. Then take one large step to get back to your normal walking pattern. This step recruits additional muscle, upping fat loss, says Cameron McGarr, C.S.C.S.

    Rent motivation.
Once a week, watch a movie that inspires you to exercise. Examples: Rocky (for the gym), American Flyers (for cycling), Hoosiers (for team sports), and Chariots of Fire and Without Limits (both for running).

    Break a record.
Challenge yourself to run farther in the same amount of time—even if it's just one-tenth of a mile—every single workout. This ensures you're always burning more calories from one workout to the next.

Pickles are good but they have a ton of sodium. Keys to living healthy are really eat less, exercise more. But that obvious bit of advice aside, I highly recommend reading a few books by Michael Pollan. Specifically:

    "Omnivore's Dilemma"
    "In Defense Of Food"
    "Food Rules: An Eater's Manifesto"

Its not about just losing weight but also about living healthy. I try and buy local and organic produce and meat when I can. I avoid as much processed food as possible. I don't need those chemicals. And just be active. I love to run and its probably the best way to stay in shape but anything you do to be active is good for you.

Good call on the Pickles one David. I do not agree with them either on that one. I've been trying to keep the sodium intake at a minimum for my daily diet. I do however like some of the tips about getting out there and getting off of your butt!

The key is just making it part of your life. I get antsy when I don't go for my run. Embrace a healthy lifestyle and you'll feel better every day.

Ok, now its a beautiful day out so I'm goin for a run ;)

I'm one of those people that can eat whatever they like and not gain weight. It was really frustrating when I was a kid cause I was so small.

high fructose corn syrup, saturated fats, hydrogenated oils, fried foods, processed foods, foods with hormones are all toxic to the body and get stored in your fat cells... losing weight basically comes down to eating healthy and exercising. The simplest way to put it is to try to avoid these foods (although high fructose corn syrup is in just about every drink except water and many other foods too) and burn more calories than you're taking in... and that will equal weight loss. Instead of snacking on pickles i would recommend to snack on complex carbs (ex: brown rice or sweet potato) in the morning/afternoon and fiber/water-rich vegetables in the evening(ex: broccoli, apple, celery...). The reason for this is that eating foods rich in sodium will increase your blood pressure and make you retain more water. Also, carbs give your body energy throughout the day, but when digested, the body stores carbs as sugar(energy) but if you do not use this energy it will be stored in your fat cells. Some fiber rich vegetables will actually burn more calories than they contain when you eat them because it takes more calories for your body to digest them... Try to eat your fruits and veggies raw if possible for the maximum amount of nutrients, and switch your protein sources for more nutrients... (don't eat just chicken for 2 months straight... substitute with beans, fish, lean beef, or clean low-sugar whey protein). NOW with all that said, it will seem easy to do but it takes alot of discipline to eat right and that is only half of it... the other half is getting your butt to the gym I would recommend atleast 4 days a week to start then you can cut back once you reach a body youre comfortable with.

Here is a cool article that talks about a healthy snack and goes more in depth about fatty/unhealthy foods.

Let me put your mind to rest at once, watermelons are not fattening.

Watermelon is a fruit rich in water content (90% water). It is highly beneficial for health. It helps increase the water content in our body, it contains necessary minerals like potassium and is a great source of vitamin C and vitamin A.

Watermelon also provides immediate energy to the body in the form of glucose, just like any other fruit. The glucose in fruits is in the natural form of fructose. You need have no concerns about the fattening value of glucose or sweetness present in fruits.

Stop calorie counting it is a useless and myth laden method of weight calculation. For examples

1 cup of milk shake made from sugar will contain 190 calories

1 cup of pure fresh fruit juice may contain 210 calories

Which do you think is fattening?

The milk shake of course. I will tell you why.
What do we put on fat?

We become fat because we put on fat on several areas of our body, mostly the thighs, buttocks, mid section, arms, legs and chin.

What is fat? It is most waste material which has been stored for disposal later.

Why is it stored? Because the body did not get enough time to dispose it or because it was not digestible.

Diary products are not digestible, they will get stored as waste. Meat and non-vegetarian food is toxic to say the least, they are stored as waste in our body. The various fries, bakes and other cooked food contains 80% waste. It is stored for disposal.

Raw fruits and vegetables contain nothing which cannot be digested. They are simplest foods to break down. Nutrition is easily extracted from fruits and vegetables, it is tend circulated to all parts of the body due to the high water content in these foods.

There is no toxic waste deposited in any part of your body when you eat raw fruits and vegetables, whatever idiotic numbers are shown in the calorie chart have no meaning when it comes to consuming these foods.
Water melon has high calories but it is not fattening?

That's correct. Calories have nothing to do with weight gain. It just another foolishness of the modern day dietician. You need to look at the type of food not the calories in the food.

Use the below criteria to judge the fattening value of a food.

    * Is the food processed (ex Soft drinks Chips, sausages or bakery items)
    * Is the food non-vegetarian (high in fat content, low in fiber)
    * Is the food a diary product (most toxic food on earth next only to meat)
    * Is the food cooked in oil (fried food is toxic)
    * Is the food boiled (less toxic but still not 100% healthy)

If your food meets any of the criteria above, then it is fattening. Forget the calories in these foods, eat them and you will gain weight if don't detoxify your system by fasting or eating fruits in the morning.

Raw fruits and vegetables are never fattening. Eat as much as you want and you won't become fat. Try it. The reason are simple

    * Raw food is the simplest to digest
    * Lot of energy is available from the glucose present in the raw food
    * This energy is used for detoxification and weight reduction
    * High water content helps flush toxins
    * High calorific value ensures lot of free energy, you will fresh throughout

Don't confuse calories with bad food. Bad food is fattening, raw food is good food and it is not fattening. Just remember a simple truth which I am sure you are aware of yourself

sorry.. but all this raw food and no meat shit is stupid... why do we have sharp teeth? Cause we are suppose to eat meat. Are we suppose to eat meat with tons of growth hormones and other shit in it? No. But we are suppose to eat meat. Are we suppose to cook it? Maybe.. but I'm going to. I like not having parasites and other invasive creatures living in my body. Are we suppose to eat raw vegetables and fruit? Yes, thats the way it comes. If you're going to cook vegetables, steam them, or if you boil them, use that water to cook rice with so all the minerals and healthy stuff that was lost in the boiling process gets absorbed by the rice.
I'm not digging into you at all B, but sorry, it's just the way I feel. I don't think people should smoke, do drugs or hell, I don't care if you drink but I don't. But take away my chicken... and I'll start eating people.

I grow my own chicken at my parents farm, no hormones at all. I'm not from a farming family, but my wife is, and her parents have helped us a lot. This year we're looking at trading a couple chickens for some hormone free beef.
