it doesn't come off, unless you take a pair of needle nose pliers and rip it off from the many plastic ties holding it on...replacing it is a hassle. just buy a winged G or other replacement cover from import shark or another vendor, peel off the adhesive and place it over it, or get your fine point paint brush out, but it would probably look like crap.

you need to remove most of your steering wheel assembly. If you do this make sure to disconnect your battery on the negative side, and put you car in the accessory position for at least 10 minutes prior to starting, this will help prevent your airbag from accidentally detonating but doesn't guarentee it.

There are several screws and clips involved and using a set of pliers to "rip it off" will break it permanently and you'll have to buy a new one.

Recommendation: Buy replacement part, get that painted, then do a swap rather than a tear down and rebuild twice. Use autobody paint, not cheap stuff otherwise it won't be very good. Also make sure it's been rough sanded and primered before final paint. Clear coating will help protect your work but will make it shiney.

My center stack painted with Matte Black, it's now Glossy Black don't have pic except night gauge pod pic in my album.

Does it look like crap if the winged emblem covers it? Or is it molded on?

And does this apply to the one on the trunk, or is that easier to just pull off?

Ya know, Snoop, I never wanted to admit this, but your advice is bullshit...
I know, because I been there....

First of all, why would anyone want to paint the "H" black?
Second of all, there are no screws or clips invovled in replacing it
unless you are replacing the airbag assembly, which is what some
scumbag parts guy tried to get me to do when I asked for a replacement
"H" after I fucked up my replacement, as described below...

Got the shiny new "G" Wing steering wheel insert from ImportShark and assumed (means makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me") that I had to remove the Hyundai drunkern "H" to install....
    Wrongo!!! Bigtime!!

I took the needlenose pliers and grunted and ripped until the "H" came off
and then discovered that there were at least 8 plastic ties, maybe 10 that held that stupid "H" to the steering wheel.....

Well, I figured, just had to get that out of the way, got my "Winged G" Importshark replacement and discovered that it was convex and wold not fix on the now flat space where I had ripped of the "H", it bent and altho I straightned it out, there was a crease down the middle...

    Fuck ME!

    Well,

I pulled the rest of the plastic tie remants out of the steering wheel with my needle nose pliers, sanded down the rest, straighened out the ripped out "H"
sanded the bottom and applied some 3M Emblem Adhesive and repositioned it on the steering wheel...having bent the ImportShark Winged G replacement in my initial attempt, I reorderd it...by the time I got it, the reattached "H' was solid as a rock, the replacement went on and now looks OEM...

I guess I was never cut out to be a bodyshop guy, but I do learn from my mistakes.....Hope no one else makes the same one

The one on the trunk is held on by two lame screws plus some adhesive...Casey has a nice video of how to take apart your trunk and take out the screws and install the wing emblem (apparently there is one that also has screws) ...however, I got the one that was just remove and apply ffrom import shark....take some pliers and rip rip it off...(make sure to protect the paint outside the "H" with cloth, but as far as what happens underneath, who cares? Just make sure to get off the old adhesive (which they put on in additon)...I recommend using your, or in my case my wife's, hair dryer to get it nice and soft, and then apply some WD40 on cotton balls and rub until the adhesive is all gone...let it dry a while, then more cotton balls with rubbing alcohol...let it dry, apply you new wing...

DUDE!! I SO read the first post wrong!! I thought he meant the bezel around the buttons! Not the "H".

I have no idea how to take the "H" off without breaking it. Never tried.

IF he does mean the button bezel, then no.. my advice is not bullshit. My advice comes from people who have done it and the HMA site.

IF he does mean the "H" then yeah.. do what you said.

    @Bama
Did you mean the "H" or the button bezel?

Well, I guess, as the Warden famously said in Cool Hand Luke just before the Walking Boss shot Paul Newman dead was "What we've got here is a failure to communicate"....
Taking the silver piece off, yeah, your advice makes sense Snoop...
Seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to to paint it black,
personally, I like it fine, but,
hey, if that's what makes sense to you, go for it!
