    Default Regular/Mid/Premium...What's the Diff?

Hyundai says the Coupe was designed to run on regular gas (87 octane), and as far as I can tell it does great on it....For those of us not trying to shave tenths of a second off our 1/4 mile times, I have the following questions:

First, does anyone have any published objective data on what, if any, practical difference filling up with the higher grade gas has on performance?

If not, have any of you scientists out there tried all three, or just regular/premium and noticed any gains worth the 20 to 40 cents a gallon
difference in price from regular? If yes, please explain....

I haven't done any test to see if I can tell...but if you go up to premium, right now with gas at 2.64, premium is 2.88. A 9.1% cost premium. Which means you need to get more than 9.1% more MPG to make it pay off.

I'm not going to do the test but honestly if people were getting more than 2 MPG better on premium we'd be hearing about that ;)

Good Point Code. Besides I think you need to run at least 2 tanks before you're see any minor benefit

    Sorry if I wasn't clear...
I wasn't really thinking about improved gas mileage...
I don't think that is possible...
I think the only way to do that is leave her in the garage,
I was asking about improved street performance as it relates
to acceleration, at least as perceived, if not verifiable by stop watch...

Higher octane essentially makes the gas more stable, allowing the ecu to advance timing a few degrees. Advancing timing adds a few horsepower here and there. Depending on your driving you'll see decreased MPG with higher octane but more power. 10-15 hp is barely noticeable though so you should be fine sticking with 87.

I actually get better mpg with 87 octane I think! When I run 92 the car does feel a little more speedy in my opinion but that of course makes me burn it up quicker ;)

on 87 octane I get around 650km to a tank, on premium Shell I get about 800km to a tank. I've been driving premium for about 3 months solid now. I think the car feels abit peppier and more responsive but nothing mind boggling. But I have the 200Turbo, it likes premium, don't know about the 380's

These responses are what I suspected, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something great by saving five or six bucks a fill up using 87 octane.

With premium, I actually get less milage. But I do want to know if using regular, is it not good for the engine? Or the only difference between regular and premium is the milage and the little increace in preformance?

It's about the same for me. With premium my mileage goes down by about 2-3mpg. The car does seem to run a bit nicer though. You have to run like 2 tanks of premium for the ecu to learn the new octane it seems. If you alternate 87....91.....87...91 I feel like the car isn't using 91 at its best. Run two or three tanks of 91 and you'll really feel it.
