    Default Coupe for New Drivers?

If you had the scratch, would you buy a Coupe for your newly licensed son or daughter, assuming you had one? Forget the bad kids like I was once upon a time, how about if they were in the Honor Society, lotsa activites and had a straight A average in school?

Your kid sounds exactly like me when I got my license ;)

And I wouldn't buy this car for me as a high schooler. Even if they treat it well, their friends won't. Even if they're a good driver (which they're not) the people at school aren't. I got nailed in high school just waiting in the long line of cars to park.

Your first car is a bumper car. You're still learning how to drive. Not only that, even a good kid can be tempted to do stupid things. My last couple years of high school I did things in my little Saturn that I wouldn't dream of doing now.

If you can afford it then go for it if you want. But I think its wiser to not do it. Can still have a fun car but the Coupe is a lot of car for a teenager ;)

I agree with Codefox. When I was growing up my parents enforced a HP limit, no car over 125hp, mine which was a turbo VW Rabbit diesel had 110 on a good day. With that car I did loads and loads of bad stuff and I was a really good student and I even lived in the house mostly by myself for just over a year while my folks were working abroad. I believe RWD is a bit finicky (based soley on this car since it's my first RWD car, used to AWD and FWD) and I'm glad I wasn't trying to master the basics with it. Besides, it teaches them humility to start with some hand-me-down piece and gives a good story for later in life. I hated the kids that I went to school with that mommy and daddy bought them Porche's and BMW's, they get loads of ego with rides like that.

Also I should point out RWD is terrible for new drivers... a Honda SI which is very similar to the GenCoupe in power and proformance is 100 times safer then a GenCoupe because its front wheel drive. RWD cars when losing traction take a bit of skill to recover and FWD car losing traction just needs to have the gas let off alittle.

I agree with all of the foregoing comments...I already spent more than it would cost to buy my kids a Lambo on college...however, my brother-in-law has a newly licensed driver who wants a car and she likes the Coupe....I have made all the arguments about its too much car for a newbie to handle and the fact that she's a "good girl" has nothing to do with what she will do when "Ms Hyde" takes over on the road....I analogized him giving her a car like that to the following: "Well, bro, we took her to the range and taught her how to shoot, and she liked that, right?" "Yeah" "So why don't you give her a little .380 auto to put in her purse in case she breaks down some night and her cell phone isn't working?" "Well, that's ridiculous" he says, "Guns are dangerous!" and high performance cars in the hands of inexperienced drivers aren't?" He had no response to that, but he is putty in this girl's hands so I am not sanguine about what the outcome will be....

I watch a car salesman turn away a mother and her 16 year old today. She was going to buy him a coupe 3.8 GT. As the salesman said "WHAT AN IDIOT" Her kid didn't even have his license yet. He told her to get an insurance quote first. $2500 a year estimate. I watched his kid pout and mom tell him he will get the car.

They left in Mom's beat up minivan.

Sad how mom let herself become captive by her spoiled entitled kid.

On a side note my son was with me, and he called the kid a jerk when he bitched to his mother

    2500 a year for a newly licensed driver in a 3.8 Coupe?
Man, I'm moving to Florida, they'd probably pay me to drive it!

Anyways, sound like you raised your kid right...
hard to believe a commision salesman would turn down the sale, but,
hey, maybe I'm wrong, maybe car salesmen do have consciences!

I know I did when I sold cars.
I had a lady come in with her three kids wanting to buy a brand new truck, she lived off welfare and social assistance. I could have got her approved, she could have been roped into 450$ a month and I could have got a big chunk of cash for it. But I knew she would have defaulted, lost the truck and have no vehicle whatsoever and those kids would have suffered.
Some how.. I don't know how it happened.. but I lost her paperwork....

I think the best thing for first timers would be something small, affordable etc... I would highly recommend the new Kia koup! Great price, stylish, sporty etc... Awesome first time buyer.
