its the same as the acura's I believe...it doesn't have the purplish tint that the Mercedes have so its about 4300-5000K. My bet is with the 4300K..that seems to be oem on most HID.

As far as "upgrading" it...any tuner will advise you against that...for some reason or another stock HID with stock ballasts are brighter and more potent than aftermarket. I thought otherwise until a buddy of mine who installs them for a living told me in a hush hush manner that the best way to go about getting the best quality HID's is to go on EBAY and get the OEM bulbs and ballasts from say an Acura TL or TSX...but since the OEM on the Gencoupe 3.8 is already up to par, I see no reason in wasting the $$

I have 12000k HIDs and I dont believe they are blindingly bright, they are bright tho, with a sky blue-hyper white look to them, in a easier way to put it, I'll say:

color temperature has nothing to do with a light bulb's brightness. it only refers to the precieved level of "white".
    2650-3200K – warm white (yellowish-white)
    3200-4000K – neutral
Above 4000K– cool (bluish-white), also called "daylight"
if you own an LCD or Plasma t.v.,or a newer CRT you can play with your color temperature and see how if affects your image, it gives a precieved "brightness" to it but it is not technically brighter which is actually a measurement of lumens. In Canada (not sure about the states) there is a limit on how many lumens your vehicle can produce on public roads, most OEM's make them as close as possible to that when using HID's because HID's don't suffer from a shorter life when producing that high of a brightness.

most BMWs, and Acuras with factory HIDs, almost always have the 4300K temp.
