upgrade your shifter
Hi Fellow Owners,
I recently (last week) picked up my 2011 GC 3.8 Track with a m/t, and (so far) love it.
However I am having a bit of a problem when shifting from first to second. The shift doesn’t go smoothly, but is rather a bit rough. Now this may be due to the car being brand new and not yet broken in, but I don't know that for sure. As of this writing it has less than 250 miles on the odometer, and time might clear this “problem” up.
By rough, I mean the shift is not as smooth as going from second to third, third to fourth, fourth to fifth, and or fifth to sixth.
I’m wondering if anybody else has been experiencing the same “problem”, and if they have, what have they done (if anything) to resolve it.
Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alan
upgrade your shifter
you might be catching the "reverse" gate on the shift, could try watching how you're pulling on the shifter.

First, I really appreciate your response, however I don’t think what I might perceive as a design flaw, should be my responsibility to fix by replacing a key component of the new car I just purchased.
Second, if I were inclined to “upgrade” my shifter, where would I begin, and how big of a job is it that I’ll have to pay for?
snoopy0812:
I have been driving with manual transmissions for many years, and have never had this happen. Putting a slight amount of left pressure on the stick was, and as far as I know, is the best way to insure that I go from first to second, and not accidentally slip into fourth.
However with that said, I’ll try to not put any left pressure and try going straight down to second. I’ll post weather or not that “fixes” my problem.

Not trying to be a smart ass….but I thought we already had a “short shifter?”
Please since you have the same problem, stay tuned for my “results post.”
Thanks to you all for your quick responses.

Since you're new to the GC I will help educate you. Technically there is nothing wrong with a notchy shifter, so your dealer will do nothing for you. Look into turnin concepts for their front bushings. That will help the most. Replacing with a short shifter won't really do much. Then change the tranny oil to redline mt-90
You should pay more attention to 5th gear. If it starts grinding, bring the car in for a new tranny
I wasn't trying to imply that you didn't know how to shift a gear, catching the reverse gate is common complaint even among the pro's. I personally don't know since neither of the transmissions I've had have ever shifted nice in any gear.

Pmastron,
Thanks for the education about the GC, and for the advice about fifth gear grinding.
The only reason I brought it up, is because I have never experienced a “notchy shifter” with any of the m/t cars I have owned over many years of driving.
IMO, the shift should be smooth and not need any additional work done to the car, but hey, that’s just me.
Okay, if I seek out tumin concepts and change the front bushings, you are saying the “notchyness” will no longer be felt?
Also will going to redline mt-90 tranny oil even if I don’t change the front bushings help with the notchyness, or should I only go with redline mt-90 if I do change the front bushings?
And the very last thing; I tried googleing tumin concepts, but could find nothing. Could you help me out with their website address?
Thanks again for your experience.
Alan

snoopy0812,
I did not take your comment to mean you thought I may not know how to shift. I’m not that old that I can’t learn new things.
I took it in the spirit of your wanting to help me. In fact, between the time I wrote my first reply and now, I have had the chance to put your suggestion to work. Sorry to say, going straight down to second without putting a slight amount of “left” pressure on the stick, won’t work. But hey, I appreciate any and all input.
How are you liking your new ride?
Alan
Sorry it didn't help, but hey, it was worth a shot eh?
I love my GC, I hate it's transmission though, but my dealership is doing everything they can to get it fixed. Last attempt was adding the Redline fluid, which makes the transmission usable in colder weather, where as the old fluid, once it got below -15c good luck trying to shift at all.
