I bought a few new filters from my dealer... there was the crush washer, the large o-ring and two much smaller o-rings in there, one thin and one thicker. What are the smaller ones for? Are they maybe for the 2 liter engine?

I bought a filter for my 2.0T just to have one incase I can't get it done at my dealership (or I choose to do it myself) the Hyundai Part Number is 26300 35503 for the filter, and 21513 23001 for the oil plug gasket, which looks like an aluminium washer. There isn't any other gaskets included... just the one thats built into the filter.

Called the parts guy at my dealer... he said that the smaller o-rings are for the Genesis sedan only. The Coupe doesn't use them. They include them to save on costs so they don't have to package them separately.

This sounds a bit illegal. They can tell you that the filter must match (or surpass) certain specs, but they cannot force you to buy their brand of filter.

This is known as a "tie-in" sales provision, and they are not allowed in the U.S..

From what I understand the only car that is affected by the "must use this filter" is the 2.0T because of how the oil line to the turbo is situated in the housing. Hyundai can't guarantee that all the filters that are made aftermarket have wide enough openings to allow the oil to transfer.

Thats just my understanding though so don't quote me on it.

    ...that's why they have specs...

I contacted the company that makes K&N and Mobil 1 filters yesterday, and hopefully they will soon be making a filter for the Genesis Coupe. If they do I promise you it will be much better than a Hyundai stock filter. Couple that with some Pennzoil Ultra oil and this car will rock (and get better mileage)

From what research I've done so far, it appears that the filter replacement is just that - a filter core element, and a large o-ring, instead of a traditional filter in one package deal. Here is a picture of what the Genesis Sedan filter looks like:

If the Coupe is similar then it should be VERY easy for K&N/Mobil 1 to make a filter for the car. Then you wouldn't have to worry about openings and such....

What makes you think it would be better than the OEM media filter from Hyundai? I've seen some of the aftermarket ones and they are not nearly as robust as the Hyundai one. It has a ton of pleats and a lot of surface area to work with. I've been using the Penzoil Platinum, and now the Penzoil Ultra and doing UOA's and the OEM filter does an EXCELLENT job.

The filter media used in the K&N/Mobil 1 filters is second to none. Not only do they clean longer, but they clean better (smaller microns). The number of pleats is meaningless if the media is junk (fram is a good example). Regarding the oil, Pennzoil Ultra is the best that you currently can get. Truly incredible oil
