    Default Mpgs???

So when I bought my rspec turbo, the dealership filled it up with either chevron or exxon...crappy stuff. After driving it for about 2 weeks I filled up with Shell and immediately got better mpgs (2-3 more city and 7-9 more hwy). After I fill up the mpg guage jumps to the low 30 somethings then slowly drops once i get in city(understandable). My frustration is that why can't I achieve those reading or better once i get back on the hwy? Is it because im still in break in milage? My usual rate of travel is 6th gear at 60 -65mph...thats the most efficient rate for the car (i think). Hopefully once i put a few more miles on it it'll get better.

I know a good bit about cars but some things im still a *lowers head in shame* newb on.

    Halp

I look at the mpg indicator on the dash but the only thing I really pay attention to is calculating the mpg when I fill up.

I reset my tip odometer at fill up, the next time I fill up I divide the miles travelled by the gallons of gas I put in it to fill it up and that gives me my miles per gallon.

Mine has steadily gone up, but, big but here, I'm also changing gas grade. I really have not paid attention to which brand of gas I use (I've used Wawa, Sheetz, Exxon, Chevron, Shell, etc.) but after a few weeks of running unleaded I gradually changed over to unleaded plus (89 octane) and I've seen my in town mileage go from 21/22 mpg up to 23.5 and my highway (going on road trips) increase from 26.5/27 up to 28.5. I will now start the slow changeover to premium and see if it goes up anymore. My car is between 2 and 3 months old and has about 3,000 miles on it. That is no where near enough miles to be broken it yet. In the past I've really seen a difference when my car/truck gets up to around 60,000 miles. Around there I can really tell a difference in how it runs and a small increase in gas mileage.

Just keep documenting what you do. Without good documentation/data its too easy to let personal feeling sway you conclusion. Oh, mines a 3.8 Track with a manual transmission (for reference on the miles per gallon number) and the road trips are full loaded (means the back seat is laid down and the "cargo" is piled up to or above the bottom of the windows back there and the trunk is full. You know how it is. We go somewhere for the weekend and while I may take 2 days of clothes with me my wife takes 5 days of clothes and shoes.

I commute atleast 30 miles a day given the day so mpgs are crucial to meh. But once I graduate college and buy a small house im gonna get a ghetto sled to just dick around in.

I started the switch to premium gas a few weeks ago. I got 28.5 on my highway trip with mid range/plus gas and when I came home I filled it with premium.

I got 21.5 mpg on the last fill up but the one before that was 26 mpg for in town driving. I'll keep checking it but I'm going to start a more detailed log (notebook in the glove box) that I'll also track brand of gas in as well.

I find (for the turbo manual car), 65 mph at 2750 rpm's is the best speed for optimal mpgs. The guage will climb about 1/10 every quarter or half mile. Granted it's also hot as Satans asshole outside all over the country.
