Correct. We cannot tell whether or not an ECU has an aftermarket flash. All the flash does it change operating parameters inside of the ECU. Using the GDS we can just compare values to what the computer should be predetermined to do. If the values have been changed and the figures we are seeing are within those changed values, then all appears good.
Also 2.0T use the same oil filter as all spin on hyundais. accents, elantras, santafe 2.4 2.7 3.5, etc.
Also its not as though we do not care about modifications, its just a judgement call. If you come in for trans grinding, and I see an aifilter or whatever. Big deal. Now if I see tampered with wastegate actuator, mbc, full exhaust, worn rear tires etc etc etc then we have a problem as that is interpreted as abuse. Also Hyundai does not ask us if the car has been modified, we inform them of anything suspicious and photo document all suspicious activity. They make the final judgment call on what is cool and what you are SOL for. In the end they are a business, the less they spend the more they make.
EDIT: To answer your question, all hyundais are designed to run on regular. Most likely they couldn't find anything wrong so they just fed you some BS. If there are no codes, chalk it up to shit happens and move on.
